The Project
Future marine scientists and conservators are the target audience at this engaging aquarium expansion. The accessible and welcoming South Building features dynamic, immersive experiences with new animals and galleries. Super-sized graphics lead visitors through the Undersea Super Powers gallery where fast-punching mantis shrimp and eerily electric scallops are among the cast of characters brought to life through models, media and hands-on interactives. The new Jellies Gallery, glowing in low, blue light, replicates a deep-sea experience and features a Moon Jelly touch tank. A 13,800 sf Vet Center addition offers a literal window into animal care where vital, real-time clinical care and lab work are the backdrop for visitor-driven science observations in the adjacent mock field laboratory. The James River watershed-themed outdoor learning and play area provide hands-on ways for the youngest visitors to explore ecosystems.
