Following a $28 million transformation, the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center has unveiled the 3,929 m² (42,300 sf) renovated south building, which includes indoor and outdoor exhibits and a new vet center.

The interiors are inspired by the colors and textures of marine habitats and were designed using durable and sustainable materials.

Other features of the aquarium’s renovated and expanded facility include immersive experiences with new animals and galleries, interactive exhibits and kids’ play areas, touch pools, an observable veterinary care center, a Jellies Gallery, and an Undersea Super Powers Gallery.

A 1,282 m² (13,800 sf) addition to the south building now houses a vet center which includes a clinical lab space, treatment and surgery facilities, ICU care space, a necropsy lab, and veterinary staff offices, and meeting spaces.

Architectural firm CambridgeSeven designed the museum and exhibits in collaboration with Woolpert, the architect of record.
