Springfield, MA
Having designed the original basketball history museum in Springfield, we gladly teamed with the current organization’s staff, curators and donors to bring the game’s history and excitement to a whole new generation of fans. As attendance soared over the years, an expansion and a full redesign of the visitor experience became warranted. The 3-phase project transformed the museum and Hall of Fame into an experiential destination honoring the legends and legacy of the sport.
The existing retail and lobby areas have been re-imagined into the Tip-Off Pavilion, turning an underutilized congregation space into an impactful entry experience. Exhibits are organized to improve visitor flow through the museum. Interactive kiosks and legends’ “lockers” not only tell their stories in an exciting new way, they also provided more opportunities for sponsorship. The arc of the ball’s trajectory is a unifying design element throughout, notably in the updated Nike Theater and contingent exhibits.
The final phase of the transformation concentrated on the Hall of Fame gallery, expanding it beyond its current location in the dome to feature a reverential homage to its members. The mezzanine level of the dome traces thematic storylines and highlights the greatest moments of the game with interactive exhibits, artifacts and enhanced media to tell the complete story of the game.
