The Project

Fields Corner Station is a major intermodal hub that serves as a transfer point between the subway and several bus routes. It also is the main public access from Dorchester’s commercial center to downtown Boston. It handles over 4,000 passengers a day and improvements for circulation, safety and way-finding were long overdue.

The Approach

After analyzing the circuitous maze passengers had to navigate, the station was completely reconfigured to bring the buses to grade and rerouted. Subway platforms were extended and protected with new canopy winged roofs. Entrances were clearly identified off both main cross streets.

The Result

In addition to solving the safety and circulation problems, the renovation includes a new lobby and drop off areas as well as improvements to the abutting Charles Park and is a more inviting approach to the neighborhood.

It's a world of difference from what it was years ago.
