Greensboro Cultural Center

Greensboro, NC

This transformation of the former home of the Greensboro Daily News created a new arts center serving more than 25 organizations. The four-level complex, containing office, rehearsal and studio space, is unified by a dramatic three-story atrium cutting diagonally through the complex, a striking feature of the adaptive reuse. Details from the original buildings, such as ornamental plaster moldings from the newspaper company’s former lobby, were preserved and incorporated. The project included a 20,000 sf addition, which resulted in a total of 114,000 sf housing galleries, dance, theater, printing and music studios, as well as offices for arts and community organizations.
