Installation of a network of permanent exhibits designed to showcase the past, present and future of the region’s “blue” or water-based economy is underway in 10 Cape Cod towns.

Expedition Blue Waypoints are interpretive structures that include a responsive mobile website integrated with the network to inspire and educate visitors of all ages about the region’s unique connection – economically and socially – to its water and coastal resources.

The installations are a series of modular cubes, panels and posts, inspired by lifesaving shacks that once dotted teh coastline of the Cape and Islands. Each waypoint features information displays and connections to the mobile website that encourage participants to learn about and experience activiies that tie the region to its maritime heritage and modern blue economy.

More than 30 waypoints are being placed at meaningful sites in Barnstable, Bourne, Brewster, Provincetown, Sandwich, Tisbury and Yarmouth. Installation at all locations in expected to be completed by early July.

Expedition Blue Waypoints are a component of the Caoe Cod Cahmber of Commerce’s Blue Econoby project, an initiative created to balance and grow the region’s economy by focusing on its water and coastal resources. The current project is funded by a $1,000,000 grant awarded in 2019 by the Baker-Polito Administration’s Seaport Economic Council.

“It is gratifying to see this important project come to fruition,” said Wendy Northcross, Cape Cod Chamber CEO. “Participating towns chose the locations, development of content, and structure style best relevant to each of their unique stories. The Expedition Blue Waypoints project will surely inspire current and future generations to consider Blue Economy careers and realize the importance of protecting our waters and coastal resources.”
